What is a Cut Roof?

A cut roof is a traditional roof construction method typically found in homes built before around 1975. These roofs were constructed on site by carpenters, using individual structural timbers rather than factory-made components.

The main structural elements of a cut roof include:

Rafters - the sloping timbers that form the roof shape.
Purlins - horizontal beams supporting rafters at mid-span.
Ceiling Joists - horizontal timbers forming the ceiling below.
Struts and binders - vertical and angled supports to transfer loads down into the walls

Many hipped roofs — such as pairs of hipped semi-detached houses — are cut roofs, built using this traditional timber method.

In most cut roofs, the rafters are typically spaced at 400mm centres, which means there are more structural members across the loft space compared to newer roof types.

Because these roofs rely on long timber spans and multiple support members, it’s common for them to experience some natural deflection over time. After decades of loading, timber movement, and settlement, the structure is rarely perfectly straight.

When converting a loft with a cut roof, the ecoTrus approach is typically to remove the existing internal roof structure and replace it with a new engineered steel superstructure.

This process usually involves removing the Rafters, Purlins, & Struts and internal supports.

The ecoTrus system is then installed between the structural load-bearing walls, creating clear structural lanes across the loft space.

Because cut roofs typically have rafters at 400mm centres, there are more connection points across the roof structure, which generally means more steel is required compared to a trussed roof (which is usually built at 600mm centres).

This can make cut roof conversions slightly more material-intensive.

What is a Trussed Roof?

Trussed roofs were not designed to be converted.

The internal web members are essential to the roof’s strength. When these are removed to create usable space, the structure becomes weak and typically requires large structural steel beams to compensate.

Traditionally, this can mean:

Parts of the roof covering being removed
Complex structural steel installation
A slower and more disruptive build
Padstones in bedrooms below
Damage to ceilings

This is why trussed roofs have historically been considered difficult to convert.
